Are Cliches Okay?

It’s been awhile since I wrote another for the blog. But I’m curious to know one thing. When you read a manga and there are numerous cliches in the story, is it okay? You’ve heard my take on the subject of walking cliches, but I wonder about other people’s opinions.

For those who don’t know what a cliche is (shame on you), here is the definition from Wiki:

A cliché is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel.

Now if you need an example, just read a few manga titles and find some common element within each manga. The “good” guy character, rain equals sick person, love, etc. I don’t really consider “fan service” as a cliche, but it is a well known technique used in many manga titles.

Personally if the story is strong or the character develops into something more, then it isn’t such a problem. But it becomes bothersome when the cliche doesn’t go away. But I’m more interested in others opinions of the subject.

I hate cliches. But there are some cliche that are good.

It depends on how the cliche is used. For example, a show that has plenty of cliche characters, and realizes that many of their characters are cliche, and makes fun of them. That would e fine indeed.

But generally, I don’t mind cliche, except when the cliche reflects laziness and lack of imagination. For example, characters or plots that are really really cliche.

This was probably my worst attempt at an explanation I’ve ever done. I’m distracted by the noise of my computer fan, which is really freakin loud.

Please keep in mind to 1) respect others opinions, 2) stay on topic, and 3) not overly use curse words (you can still use them, just not too much in one sentence). Debating and disagreeing is fine, but insults aren't. Thank you.
