Oldboy Film Remake is Dead

Post Written by Jules on November 10th, 2009

oldboy

From MovieWeb.com and Latino Review:

DreamWorks was in the process of obtaining the rights to the original Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya with Mandate. The film was going to be based on that manga and not the Oldboy film, but it seems that DreamWorks and Mandate couldn’t see eye to eye and have left the project.

Don’t really know what to think of this. I’m happy that Hollywood will stay away from this franchise, too bad the same can’t work on the Cowboy Bebop movie. But I have nothing notable to look forward to that involves manga related movies. At least the Spielberg and Will Smith adaptation had some chance, but still it didn’t feel right. What do you guys make of the news?

Manga Character Cliches That Should Die: The Clueless Chick

Post Written by Jules on November 4th, 2009

Continuing with this ongoing series of manga character cliches we wish to stop seeing, we will be looking into one that affects shoujo manga titles (and some shounen) very much: the clueless chick. The girl that zones out to collect her thoughts when someone is talking to her. The girl that can’t put two and two together. The girl that doesn’t understand sexual undertones. Yeah, that girl. She comes in many different forms: the naive kid-like teen (sometimes even a young adult), the mother, the mother-in-training, the lovesick high school student, etc. But when it comes down to it, when her help is most needed, she can always be counted on. Sadly, her personality is such a hinder to the readers’ enjoyment the reader ignores her efforts. Pity, but we should move on. Let’s just see why this cliche is so annoying.

Post Written by Jules on October 31st, 2009

villain

Happy Halloween to all the readers. Hopefully everyone will have a great time either getting candy or dressing up for parties. Though things have been slow here, we are aware of the times. And for such an occasion, I have decided to do a TOP LIST of seinen manga villains based on all the manga titles I have read. The villains we love to hate or makes the protagonist’s life a complete Hell, we will acknowledge them and all their efforts (but only for today). I know I may be missing a few good villains from the manga titles I haven’t read, but that shouldn’t stop me from posting my thoughts now should it?

Manga Character Cliches That Should Die: The Good Guy

Post Written by Jules on October 20th, 2009

Sorry for the lack of update, but things became a little slow when I left on vacation. But since I’m back, let’s look into annoying character cliches that really need to stop being created.

Here we will look at the honest to goody-goody, saint/holy man or woman that should be God’s right hand. That is right, I ‘m talking about the Good Guy (or woman). The guy that defends justice, God’s will, and whatever other crap that involves “goodness”. The guy that will defeat the demon, but shows mercy when the enemy wishes it. And then realizes that he/she should have never showed mercy because the enemy was using the good guy’s characteristic as an advantage. Yes, that guy. Let’s look at a few reasons why he/she is so wrong in manga, or any other type of mediums for that matter.

Potential Manga Adaptations: My Name is (Fill in Japanese Name)

Post Written by Jules on October 9th, 2009

my_name_is_earl

I was just recently thinking about a canceled show that had a great storyline and concept behind it. That show was My Name is Earl.

The show started with a white trash hick named Earl Hickey who did petty crimes for a living. One day he wins the lottery, one of the scratching ticket types. Shortly after, he gets hit by a car and the wind blows away his winning ticket. In the hospital, his cheating wife wants a divorce and is left with nothing but a bruised up body. He watches a show that introduces him to “karma” and decides to start cleaning up his act. He makes a list of every bad thing he has done and corrects his past actions one by one (there was a lot of things he did bad). “Karma” took note of his change and let him have his winning ticket back. And thus he continued on with his Karma crusade…until the show got canned.

dragonball

Looking through the manga news and found something to debate about. Apparently local schools around Wicomico, in Maryland County, are taking out Dragon Ball Mangas because of nudity and sexual content.

“In cartoon format, it depicts nudity, sexual contact between children and sexual innuendo among adults and children,” Holloway told fellow council members during the comment period of Tuesday’s meeting.

Photocopies provided by Holloway detail several of the scenes.

I could argue Mr. Holloway’s overreaction over this whole thing, or I could rant on the writer and his terrible demonstration as a “journalist”. I think I’ll do the latter. Mr. Latshaw even though you are writing for a local paper, I’m assuming, write from both sides of the argument (it’s good practice for when you apply to BIGGER places). I also saw the followup article that came out today which you tried to put some research in, but failed based on the first line of the article:
