Save a Few Dollars: Buy Online

Post Written by Jules on September 2nd, 2009

Money Sign

The economy isn’t looking too great nowadays, which means cutbacks on a few of our favorite shopping items like comics and manga. But if you really need your manga fix, even if it’s just one volume, here are a few dollar saving tips.

Buy Online

There is a simple reason for this other than laziness. Products offered online at retail websites are cheaper than at the store. Take a testimony from me.

Windy, Leenah, and I drove to Borders over the weekend to look for some “How To Draw Manga” books. Windy found one by Hikaru Hayashi priced at $25 (retail price). Leenah found another one by Christopher Hart priced at $22 (retail price). Since Leenah didn’t have money to pay for hers, I had to. I knew it was cheaper online, but she didn’t want to wait for it in the mail. She wanted it now.

Breaking News

Marvel and Disney... together?

I know this doesn’t have much to do with manga, but more for American comics. Either way, this is big news. Disney owns Marvel.

You can find the article here.

This may be a smart move on Disney, though some fans don’t feel easy knowing their favorite Marvel franchise is in the same boat as Mickey and Donald. Will Disney change Marvel to hold up to their family-friendly standards?

Probably not.

Disney does control the ABC networks, home to Lost and Desperate Housewives, and Pixar, which doesn’t seem to have changed much from when they first started. But who knows what the future holds for newly bought Marvel characters. Luckily for you, this isn’t the only news to come out today.

Guess Who

culpritWe need your help in identifying this suspect. This person was caught on tape stealing multiple items from our vender. We don’t have much of a lead as to whom this person is, but we do have a few clues:

1. The suspect is female

2. The suspect goes to school

3. A bent spoon was left behind

Manga Week Update

Post Written by Jules on August 28th, 2009

For those aware how the scanlation nation works, you’d know the scans are out. Sadly this week looks pretty weak for Shounen’s top series: Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece (NOT ONE PIECE TOO!). On a lighter note, it seems an early scan of Skip Beat has come out for Shojo fans. The chapters of Skip Beat are starting to get intense.

Why Is Naruto So Popular?

Post Written by Jules on August 26th, 2009

Naruto

Whether you love him or hate him, Naruto will be around for awhile. But what is it about the series that makes it so popular? Fans and non-fans (is there another word for haters?) have asked this question. Some say it’s the story, others say it’s the humor, a small minority say it’s the “hot guys”… I ignore those people. There is no one answer, but there are a few ideas.

It’s the Action and Adventure Aspect

… maybe. I don’t doubt the adventure and action is what keeps the audiences’ attention. Pokémon and Dragonball Z (the animes) were hugely popular in their time. But the popularity of the two series started to dwindle later on. Why? From my point of view, they were getting repetitive. The boss battles in Dragonball Z stuck to the over-the-top, over-stretched episode format. People started to skip episodes. Ash (Pokémon) never got around to reaching his dream of becoming a Pokémon Champion, maybe because there were too many pokémon around, so the series stretched. So, is Naruto any different? Yes and no. Yes because the series in manga and anime form have lasted for so long. No because it is starting to show signs of repetition (at least the anime is). Naruto still has a long way to reaching his dream, hopefully before it gets boring.
